Your Medicare options.
Most people choose between Medicare Advantage and Original Medicare with a Medigap policy and a Part D plan. Here's how the pieces fit.
Original Medicare (Parts A and B)
The federal program. Part A covers hospital stays and Part B covers doctor visits and outpatient care. You can see any provider in the country that takes Medicare, but there is no yearly limit on what you pay out of pocket.
Medicare Advantage (Part C)
A private plan that replaces Original Medicare. Most have a provider network, set copays, a yearly out-of-pocket limit, and drug coverage. Many add some dental, vision, and hearing benefits.
Medicare Supplement (Medigap)
A private policy that works alongside Original Medicare and pays some or all of what it leaves behind, like the 20% coinsurance. It doesn't include drug coverage, so most people add a Part D plan.
Part D drug plans
Prescription drug coverage from a private plan, either on its own with Original Medicare or built into a Medicare Advantage plan. In 2027, out-of-pocket costs for covered drugs are capped at $2,400.
